Lets talk Graphene: Strongest thing on Earth !
What is the strongest material ever to exist on Earth? To be clear, I’m talking 300 times stronger than A36 structural steel, and 40 times stronger than diamond, something stronger than steel and Kevlar and strong enough to stop a bullet !
What about the thinnest material that we see ? For that, I’m talking at 1 atom think: you heard that right, just as thick as a single atom.
Meet Graphene !
Graphene takes the award for not only the strongest and thinnest material to Earth, it has some other amazing characteristics.
- It stands as the lightest material to exist. For comparison, a single sheet of graphene big enough to cover a football field would weigh less than a gram.
- It is not only the lighest, but also stretchiest material.
- It is the best absorber of white light.
- It is the best conductor of electricity, and heat.
So in short, Graphene is the most strong, thin, flexible, lightweight yet fastest heat and electricity conductor in the world that has the best light absorption too.
So what is Graphene ?
Graphene is made of pure carbon and extracted from graphite. It was was discovered in 2004 by Prof Andre Geim and Prof Kostya Novoselov at The University of Manchester and this discovery won them the Nobel prize.
Per the attached image from the University of Manchester website, Graphene has many many uses including in biomedical field for targeted drug delivery, improved brain penetration, for home made health-testing kits and even ‘smart’ implants.
So say hi to Graphene and learn more about it !
Thank you for reading and have a good day.
